Adding character to a new build

How do I add character to my new build?
This is a really common question people ask. So many people choose to move into a new build because everything is done, you have a warranty and people generally feel like they know what they’re getting with a new build.

The problem is, they tend to lack character, so how can you add it and make it feel a more inviting and a warm place to come home to?

One thing that works really well is to add storage, add shelving to display your family photos, books, favourite ornaments or things that have meaning to YOU! If you look carefully in this photo you might see the old binoculars that belonged to this clients grandfather.

Try to mix up your fabrics and furniture. Blend antiques with more contemporary chairs, this gives a really lovely contrast between the old and new. Check your lighting, do you have lighting at different heights throughout your space. In the evening we don’t want the main lights on so use table or floor lamps.

Of course, layering some throws and cushions will bring warmth to your space by bringing in new textures and you can change these up for each season.

Then finally, my favourite, add some greenery. It might be trees, plants, flowers or all three, however you do it I promise it will finish off your room beautifully.
